Overview of the Bidart Coastal Path
The Basque Coastal Path is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Pyrenees. Along its 54 km stretch from Bidart to Hendaye and even to San Sebastian, you’ll discover stunning panoramas (Saint-Jean-de-Luz is easily visible) of the coast and the mountains. Its trails are accessible to everyone, including children, and completing the entire route takes about 7 hours. However, you can choose to enter the path through one of its six entry points: Hendaye, Urrugne, Ciboure, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Guéthary, and Bidart. The path is also marked with beacons and interpretation panels on specific themes characteristic of the Atlantic coast, such as surfing, landscapes, fishing, or history. Basque Coastal Path: Tips and Advice
To prepare for this unforgettable hike, a few tips are essential. Equip yourself with the necessary gear: sturdy walking shoes for the hiking trails, sunscreen, a cap, sunglasses, and enough water for the journey, as some parts of the path have no shops. It’s recommended to follow the route from north to south to make the most of the viewpoints. We suggest going with experienced hikers to fully enjoy the natural spaces of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques. Some sections are off-limits to animals, so you’ll need to leave your furry friends at home or choose an adapted route. Lastly, don’t forget to plan your return! Basque Coastal Path: Recommended Itinerary
To fully enjoy the stunning landscapes of this incredible hike, we have prepared a list of must-see spots that you shouldn't miss.
- Starting from Bidart, the first remarkable viewpoint is at the Sainte-Madeleine Chapel, perched on a cliff. Built in 1820, it offers breathtaking views of the Basque coast. Take a moment to pause on its esplanade and admire the vastness of the ocean.
- Still in Bidart, the Saint-Joseph Chapel overlooks a world-famous surf spot: Parlementia. If the conditions are right and the waves are rolling, you’ll witness an impressive athletic spectacle!
- Take a break at the charming and picturesque port of Guéthary. Enjoy a refreshing drink on a café terrace or have lunch at one of the beachside restaurants. From here, watch the waves and surfers; one never tires of admiring the immensity of the ocean.
- Continue your walk past Erromardie and Lafitenia beaches, another surfing hotspot, and you’ll quickly reach the Sainte-Barbe point. Here, a pretty little white chapel of the same name awaits. The view is magnificent: on one side, Saint-Jean-de-Luz; on the other, the Fort of Socoa.
- Between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye lies one of the most beautiful sections of the trail: the Basque Corniche. Made up of steep cliffs and wild coves below, it stretches across ten kilometers of protected natural space. Stop by the Maison de la Corniche to learn more about the local fauna and flora.
- As you approach Hendaye, the trail winds through a verdant plain and crosses the Domaine d’Abbadia. Don’t miss the beautiful coves scattered here and there. You can also see the famous “Twins,” two rocks separated from the coast by erosion. If you visit at low tide, you can access their secluded cove, which feels like the edge of the world.
- The final stage marks the end of the hike: relax on Hendaye beach to once again admire the beauty of the ocean and gaze at the “Two Twins” with your feet in the sand. Magnificent!
